FingerPrinting

Biometrics technology – A booming sector

Biometrics sector is booming with a projected growth of more than 16% annually in the coming 5-6 years which would also lead to a drastic expansion in capital employed for the sector. Mere signatures, passwords and PINs are not sufficient anymore for security as they are prone to be tampered with and because they can be hacked as well. Major demand for biometric technology comes from the banking/financial sector, healthcare industry and government agencies. In Las Vegas fingerprinting is the most demanded biometric tech. getting fingerprint is rather easier than any other form of biometrics and the technology is not very complicated as well. All of us human beings carry a completely unique fingerprint and no two person, not even identical twins, carry similar fingerprints. That is a major reason for its popularity.

Biometric technology has increasingly become popular in mobiles as well. Touch ID was introduced by Apple for its model 5S. It has become standard for Apple phones to have this technology in all its upcoming models. Biometrics also include other form of identification such as iris scanner, geometry of fingers and palms, DNA, Voice recognition among more. The process is simple. A receptor/sensor is fitted is employed to receive the input from the user. Then the input is translated into computer codes so that the computer can analyse and compare the code with already existing code, to either accept or reject the request.

The need for higher security has gone up, especially since 9/11. The application can be seen in immigration centres in USA.
